There is a cultural aspect to consider here. I, too dislike haggling, but I am from a place where it isn't the norm. Many parts of the world ONLY haggle for goods. To not do so would be considered rude. Haggle is a word, right?

I don't have the time to waste so I ask for offers and if it is reasonable I sell it. By reasonable is that it is more than I can get from a merchant or worth not putting it on a hero. I never even knew there were sites like this that had values of some of the items until recently. Over the years I've probably sold thousands of plat worth of items to merchants just to get rid of it.

I know how annoying that is but I use a different technique. I advertise the price I want and then when they put that money in the trade window I can tell they want it! You should try it sometime, it really does work

No one ever pays the price you're advertising... and everyone will just low-ball or say something like "That's more than it's worth, I'll give you this much" ... it does not work.

Naturally, this is not true.
People pay the asking price of things I try to sell more often than they haggle. Sure, if someone wants to try to bring my price down, they're free to do so, and may succeed. But usually it's just "hey i'll buy that" followed by my exact asking price in a trade window.
Note: Trying to sell anything in this game is accepting an initial investment of time lost via "sitting in town and saying WTS for minutes on end". Therefore, the times that I'm willing to squander my life sitting in kama trying to sell something are few and far between.
At those times, my goal is to sell, and then to GTFO... this is made possible by advertising a set price for my goods. Playing a silly "lol, offer" game with potential buyers lenghtens the time I spend HATING the player-to-player economy in this game and shortens the time I spend playing it and having fun.
Three cheers for GW2's auction house. Thy coming elates the masses.

I just say offer because Guru's price check forums are unreliable, there isn't a good auction system in place to base pricing off of, and when you ask for a price check, you either get ignored or shit lowball offers from power traders.

in GW, they are no convinient sale system
Selling is generally time consuming, and it is time you could use to get quests rewards, zaishen keys, etc...
buying is same.
in your WTS/WTB : give the more information, your expected price or the price you want the other to counter offer, to avoid useless interaction and prefilter offers that won't fit.
don't bother with wts/wtb whose prices are missing...

While I'm sure there are sellers who are trying to get every piece of gold they can, not every one selling in Kamadan is a regular "seller" in that sense.
Many of them are just regular players who have one or two things to sell. These people don't necessarily know the value of what they are selling other than some idea they got off some price check, and one way to find out what people really pay for something is to ask for an offer.
Also, any of the sellers may be replying to several buyers at once, so the request for an offer could be sort of an auction.
In other words, there can be many reasons for it. Getting your knickers in a knot over it and giving some sort of reply like "1g" helps no one. If you really want to make the whole process go smoother, just give a fair and honest offer, without worrying about trying to low-ball everything, or don't reply at all.

I'm sure that's true for some people, Quaker. But I've done *a lot* of in-game trading, and for the most part, it seems like it's the "gtfo noob" idiots asking for offers - at least on common, fairly low-end stuff (say, less than 50k). In my opinion, it's usually not worth the hassle to bother with them beyond an initial inquiry of the price they might have in mind. My response to "offer" is usually something like "No thanks. Let me know if you decide on a price".
(And it's nice to see another GW'er from NS )

Depending on the item that I'm selling, I may or may not ask them to offer. If it's something stable like materials or hero armor upgrades, I will just tell them my price straight away. If it's something more variable like a minipet, I will ask them to offer first. A few times I end up several thousand richer because they offer a higher price than what I'm really looking for.
Also I will pretty much always ask people for the price they are selling an item for. Often I see people with a generic title such as "Selling Minipets", and there's quite a good chance that they are noobs who returned to GW after many many years, especially if they aren't level 20. I usually ask these people how much they are selling it for, and from time to time I get incredibly crazy bargains, like 2k for a Year 4 pet and 5k for an Elf.

Just to speak for myself here: I most of the time say offer because I don't care too much anymore about ingame money. Most of the times I go with what the person offers me, if its not a rediculous price, simply because I don't want to bargain for every little platinum or ecto. So I just say hell give me what you feel like giving me, and most of the time they get it for that price. So not everyone is trying to get an outrageous offer..

You want to make a purchase and can't be bothered looking for someone else? Time is money and buyers who value time with pay more.
The simple reality is any MMO should have an auction house or market place. Something vastly superior to what GW has. It's one of the biggest glaring flaws in GW1.

If I sell something I always include my price. In my opinion it assures a quick and transparent sell. If I want to sell asap I am happy to bargain a bit and take 10% off the price.
In the rare case I buy something or actively looking for something I will almost always ignore "PM offer"-sellers because in 99% of the time those people are re-sellers that will ask for more than the item is worth.
Most importantly it will create less spam from buyers. Everyone knows my price-baseline and will not think that I don't know the market.
Of course there is always one guy who writes:
"xxK? lol..."
followed by
"I give you xK for it"
Keep your patience, always know your prices and everything will be good.
And I agree that GW has a terrible trading system, in fact it doesn't exist. Most of my playtime is occupied by trying to get rid of things for a reasonable price.
Imagine how many districts Kamadan would have if there was an auction house. And how many hundreds of hours could have been spent actually playing the game instead of "WTS Durrrrrrhurrrhrrr"

Because buyers in GW tend not to know prices but want items. Sometimes saying offer nets you a LARGE additional chunk of cash.
And sometimes they just dont know, if they say offer you can allways try lowballing them with 5k on a 500k item. Sometimes it works

Boy that's the truth. I once sold 10 ambers for 100k...that's right 10k a piece. There was nobody else around and I had bunches of ambers and he asked if anyone had any and being funny I said yes and I want 10k each and low and behold he PAID IT! lmao. So whoever said people don't pay asking prices was wrong.

They say "offer" in case you say a crazy high bid. I thought this was obvious? Next question.
